    Domestic Driveway Surfacing FAQs

Frequently asked questions about our driveway services

    What Is A Dropped Kerb?

A dropped kerb is a section of the pavement that is lowered in order to create a ramp and allow vehicles to safely drive onto a driveway or parking area from the road. It is a legal requirement if you want to access your driveway from the road.

When requested to add a dropped kerb, this usually requires permission from the local council. You will make a payment to the council for the dropped kerb, which grants you the legal right to use it, but you will not own it; the ownership will remain with the local council.

Do I Need A Preamble Driveway?

Councils have imposed a regulation that favours preamble driveways (a surface which enables water to soak through and into the ground) to combat the issue of rainwater pooling when it has nowhere to go. One of the best options for a preamble driveway is block paving. However, although a preamble driveway is favoured, it is not currently a necessity.

Should you opt for a tarmac driveway, you may need to plan and pay more for a drainage system to be included, depending on the driveway’s slope.

How Often Should I Seal My Driveway?

You will only need to seal your driveway if the surface is made from tarmac or concrete (non-preamble driveways). The sealing will prevent damage and discolouring from the elements. We recommend sealing your driveway every 2-3 years to keep it preserved. But you should ensure the driveway is completely dry before applying the sealant.

Can I Have A Driveway Without A Dropped Kerb?

No. To legally create and use your driveway, you will need to have a dropped kerb. A dropped kerb ensures that no damages are made to the pavement and underground utilities when a car leaves the road. If you have a driveway without a dropped kerb, this is illegal, and you may be liable for any damages caused.

How Do I Get A Dropped Kerb For My Driveway?

To create a dropped kerb for your driveway, you will first need to request planning permission from your local council. This is a legal requirement and a formal application process. Once approved, you will then need to hire an approved contractor to complete the job.

Sheffield Surfacing are an approved dropped kerb contractor for both Sheffield and Rotherham councils. Should you have any questions or need help with the application process, please contact us for more information.

Do I Need Council Approval To Put In A Driveway?

Yes. To put in a driveway, you will still need to obtain a permit from the council before construction can commence.
