Tarmac and Asphalt Surfacing FAQs

The most commonly asked questions about us as a tarmac contractor and our tarmac and asphalt surfacing services.

What is the difference between Tarmac and Asphalt?

Tarmacadam, usually called tarmac is a strong and durable surface made from a layer of crushed stone coated in tar.  Asphalt, on the other hand, is made by mixing bitumen, rather than tar, with crushed stones or aggregate. Both can be utilised in road surfacing projects but each has its own unique benefits.

Tarmac is strong, water-resistant and enables a good grip as well as giving a good aesthetic to the finished surface. This makes it perfect for driveways, footpaths, car parks and anywhere there is heavy use and the risk of standing water.

Asphalt is much more resistant to extreme weather conditions and needs a lot less maintenance. It is slightly smoother than tarmac and provides a great grip for types. This makes it a great option for roads, highways and anywhere with high traffic volumes.

While asphalt is a little more expensive than tarmac, it provides enhanced durability. Tarmac is more affordable making it a good option for smaller domestic and commercial uses.
